Lenticular Photo Capture

The 3D Photographer's Tool

Contents:

Purpose of the Program

Lenticular Photo Capture program is designed to control the digital cameras connected to the computer via USB (up to 8 cameras). (Only Canon DSLRs are supported for now.) It controls the cameras as they capture the individual frames and downloads them to the computer and to the Lenticular Photo Processor program; but it could also be used without the LPP tool. Within this program you can control the parameters of all the cameras at the same time, like Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, Resolution of the images, White Balance right from your computer, give names and numbers automatically to the frames to load them into the Lenticular Photo Processor program automatically in the right order for processing and save the frames to hard drive of computer directly.

NB: Demo version of Lenticular Photo Capture creates only greyscale images. The retail version handles colour images, supports up to 18 cameras.

Questions & Answers

Q.: Does the program synchronize the cameras?
A.: Yes. The program sends the «shoot» command nearly simultaneously to all cameras, but a really good synchronization is possible only when using, e. g., a wireless remote control.

Q.: I'm shooting using a remote control; what about pictures from cameras? Would they be downloaded and sorted by the program?
A.: Yes. The method of shooting (from the computer; using a button on the camera; using a remote control) is not important. In any case the program receives a message from camera that says: «a picture is ready», and then processes the picture.

System Requirements

Operating system: Windows XP/Vista/7. RAM: at least 2 GB. Display resolution: at least 800x600. Digital camera(s) Canon EOS/Digital Rebel.

Interface

Lenticular Photo Capture program display screen has two main areas. In the left area we can set up and control the cameras, in the right area we can see the picture that was taken.

mainwnd

One of the most convenient features of Lenticular Photo Capture program is the ability to identify each frame and place all the frames from all cameras of one 3D shot to a specific folder automatically, in the correct order for processing. This then allows the Lenticular Photo Processor program to efficiently align, crop, interlace and print the 3D image. The Lenticular Photo Capture program avoids the tedious work of sorting images into frame sets and the poor finished product that occurs when frames are not in the precise order.

You need to set up Lenticular Photo Capture program so that each camera is identified and each image taken by that camera is identified. This allows the computer to put all the frames from a shot; into the same folder as all the other shots taken by all of the other cameras, of the same subject frame set.

Connecting the Cameras

The Lenticular Photo Capture software will recognize the individual camera as a specific serial number and not by the position you mount it to the camera base. That is why it is important that you always use the same camera in the same location, to allow the software to correctly save the images to the files in the correct order. If you choose to change position of the cameras around, or replace a camera with a different one, you will need to repeat the following step.

To set up the actual position each camera occupies for the Lenticular Photo Capture program, we need to have all cameras connected to the Control Box and be turned on. The list of the serial numbers of each of the cameras mounted will appear if you go to Camera | Camera Sequence

Saving Files

One of the time saving features of the Lenticular Photo Capture program is the ability to name the frames and control where to save them on the hard drive of the computer. It will save a lot of your time finding the correct frame sets. Look at the picture.

saveTo

In the Folder: line you can type the path where you wish to save the frame sets on the hard drive of your computer, for example we have selected the folder C:\Frames. If the Name: line is blank Lenticular Photo Capture program will create a folder with the real time and date at which the photo was taken and save the frame set by those, in our example we took the frame set on July 9, 2010, at 11 hours, 34 minutes and 40 seconds: therefore we will find the frames in the folder shown on the next picture.

withoutCustomerName

If we type the name of a customer to the Name: line, a folder with his or her name will be created. For example, if we took the frame set at July 9, 2010, at 12 hours, 04 minutes and 05 seconds, and the name of our customer is John Smith, we can type his name to the Name: line (look at the picture). The frame set will be saved in the folder
C:\Frames\2010-07-09\John_Smith\12-04-05
Where:

The name of the customer will be added to the folder John_Smith and also to the name of each frame from the frame set.

withCustomerName

This is very convenient if your customer will be back to you and ask to reprint his or her pictures. If you have a lot of customers it will not be easy to find their frame set on your hard drive, especially if they do not remember the date of the photo session. By using this naming system all you will need is just make a search using their name.

Photographing

After shooting, the frames will be downloaded automatically to the computer by the Lenticular Photo Capture program. Now you can work with these frames using Lenticular Photo Processor software.

At the bottom of the main window of Lenticular Photo Capture you will  notice a very useful Red or Green area.

Depending of how fast or slow your computer is the frames will be downloaded from cameras to computer at a different speed. So, we have to be confident that when we will see this green; that all frames are downloaded and written to hard drive for sure. To make sure we can select the time delay which governs how long before the red mark turns to green again

. It is possible to select this delay from 5 to 50 seconds. For a fast computer you can use 5 seconds delay, for old slow computer you can setup 20, 30 or even 50 seconds delay. Once you set it you can forget it. For that you can go to Options -> Program Settings.

Next Step: Lenticular Photo Processor

In addition Lenticular Photo Capture program can download complete frame set to Lenticular Photo Processor program automatically. This saves you from having to do that manually and reduces your work and processing time. For that you can go to Picture -> Transfer Pictures to Lenticular Photo Processor or press F9 button.

<transPics

You can send all frame sets to the Lenticular Photo Processor program automatically if you check the special function Options -> Enable File Transfer to Lenticular Photo Processor.

Just make sure that the processor program is set to accept them and you are able to go right from triggering the camera to the final print automatically if you wish, or set the processing software to pause so you can check the images at key points of the process.
